Landscaping for Hanson Homeowners

Whitman and Hanson share a regional high school, and plenty of our clients have kids in the same building. We are on Hanson properties constantly, and it is one of the towns where the local knowledge genuinely changes what we recommend.

Hanson is bigger and much less dense than Whitman — more woods, more water, more land per house. It is also one of the wettest towns we work in, and that shapes almost every project here.

Water is the defining feature of Hanson landscaping

Hanson sits in real cranberry country. Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area covers a large stretch of former commercial bogs in the southern part of town, and there are working and retired bogs scattered elsewhere. Maquan Pond, Wampatuck Pond, Indian Head Pond, and Poor Meadow Brook all mean the water table sits high across much of the town.

What that means for a homeowner: a lot of Hanson properties have a spring where the back half of the yard is unusable for weeks. Some of that is a grading problem you can fix by moving surface water. Some of it is groundwater, which no amount of regrading will solve — that is a drain-to-daylight or drywell question, and on some lots the honest answer is to work with the wet area rather than against it. A rain garden or a planted swale in a spot that will never be dry lawn is often a better outcome than fighting it every year.

The soil is generally sandier here than in Whitman, particularly on the outwash areas around the bogs, which drains fast but holds very little. Those lawns dry out quickly in July even though the same property was underwater in April. Building organic matter into the soil — compost topdressing, mulching clippings, and aeration — matters more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Housing runs from older homes around the center near Route 27 and Route 58 to newer subdivisions carved out of woodland. Lots tend to be large, wooded, and edged with pine and oak, which means serious leaf and needle volume in the fall. A single-pass cleanup on a Hanson lot with mature oaks is usually not enough — we schedule two passes on most properties out here.

We also handle a fair amount of patio and walkway work in Hanson, and it is a town where the base depth conversation matters. Building a patio on a lot with a high water table without drainage under it is asking for a corner to drop after the first hard winter.

What Hanson Properties Need Most

Drainage assessments and grading work top the list, followed by two-pass fall cleanups on the heavily wooded lots and soil-building programs for the sandy areas near the bogs. Hardscape projects here almost always include a drainage component in the base.

  • Drainage Solutions & Grading

Standing water, soggy lawns, and water against the foundation — solved by moving water somewhere it belongs, not by hiding it.

Why Hanson chooses us

What Hanson Homeowners Get From Working With Us

15+ years on South Shore properties, 5.0 stars from 28 Google reviews, fully insured, and only 4 miles away in Whitman.

  • We diagnose the water before quoting anything

Hanson has more standing water than almost any town we serve. We work out whether you have surface runoff, a high water table, or a grading problem — because the fix and the cost differ enormously, and draining the wrong thing wastes your money.

  • Two-pass cleanups as standard, not an upsell

Wooded Hanson lots produce genuine leaf volume, and the oaks drop weeks after the maples finish. A single late-October pass leaves the whole oak drop still to come, which then mats under snow.

  • Soil building for sandy bog-side ground

The outwash around the bogs holds almost nothing. Compost topdressing after annual aeration is the highest-value thing most Hanson lawns can get, and it improves both the spring sogginess and the August drought.

  • Same regional high school, same soil problems

We are four miles away and our kids go to the same school. Hanson is not a town we visit — it is one we work in every week.

Sometimes fully, sometimes partly. If it is surface water collecting in a low spot with somewhere lower to send it, regrading solves it. If it is a high water table — common near the bogs and ponds — we can improve it with drainage but not eliminate it. In that case we often recommend planting the wet area with species that want wet feet rather than fighting it forever.
