Landscaping for Hingham Homeowners

Hingham has one of the most celebrated residential streets in the country and a town-wide standard of property care to match. Landscaping here has to be right — proportion, materials, and detail all show.

We do design and construction work in Hingham along with maintenance for clients who want the same crew handling everything.

A town where the details show

The historic housing stock along Main Street and through the older sections of town calls for a specific vocabulary. Natural stone rather than manufactured pavers. Bluestone walkways with clean, tight joints. Boxwood, hydrangea, holly, and lilac. Symmetry where the architecture is symmetrical. A modern multi-color paver blend in front of a Georgian colonial is a mistake you cannot undo cheaply.

Coastal exposure matters on the harbor side, at Crow Point, and out toward World's End. Salt spray, wind, and sandy soil eliminate a lot of otherwise reliable plants. Rosa rugosa, bayberry, juniper, inkberry, switchgrass, and Russian sage all handle it. Broadleaf evergreens that look fine two miles inland get scorched by winter wind on an exposed harbor lot.

Wompatuck State Park covers a large area on the south side of town, and the properties bordering it are wooded, shaded, and acidic — a completely different growing environment from the harbor-side lots. It is genuinely two towns from a horticultural perspective, and treating them the same is how plantings fail.

Hingham lots in the older neighborhoods tend to be well-established, with mature specimen plantings that need real pruning knowledge rather than a hedge trimmer. Timing matters — a rhododendron sheared in September will not bloom, and a hydrangea cut back in spring may never flower depending on the type. We prune to the plant, at the right point in its cycle.

Maintenance standards here are high and we plan for that. Crisp edges, beds detailed rather than merely mulched, and consistent service days. It is the kind of property care that only works when the same crew is on the property week after week.

Hingham also has a substantial amount of mature specimen planting that predates most of the current owners, and preserving that material is often the most valuable thing we do on a property. An eighty-year-old rhododendron or a mature holly cannot be bought back once it is disfigured. We prune those selectively and on the right schedule, and we design around them rather than through them.

What Hingham Properties Need Most

Bluestone walkways and natural stone hardscape, period-appropriate planting design for historic homes, salt-tolerant coastal plantings on the harbor side, and detail-level garden maintenance. Specimen pruning done to species-correct timing is a significant part of the work.

Love the work done by Giachetto Landscape! Cristiano did a spring cleanup for our yard and it looks fantastic, we are so happy with it. We could have never done it ourselves and are so glad that we used them! From beginning to end it was a great experience. Cristiano was very responsive and came by to give a free quote within days of my initial outreach. He was easy to work with and is such a hard worker, I highly recommend!

Rosa rugosa, bayberry, inkberry, juniper, switchgrass, Russian sage, and most ornamental grasses handle salt and wind well. Broadleaf evergreens like rhododendron and cherry laurel get scorched by winter wind on exposed lots, no matter how well they do a couple of miles inland.
