Landscaping for Cohasset Homeowners

Cohasset is granite country on the ocean. Ledge outcrops through properties all over town, the coastline is rocky rather than sandy, and the landscape character is genuinely distinct from the rest of the South Shore.

Working here means designing with the rock rather than around it, and choosing plants that handle serious exposure.

Planting designed around exposed granite ledge in Cohasset, MA
A typical Cohasset property — Norfolk County, USDA zone 6b.

Granite, ledge, and ocean exposure

Ledge near the surface changes everything about how a project gets built. You cannot always dig where you want to dig. Planting holes may be shallower than ideal, drainage trenches may not be practical on a given line, and a patio excavation may hit rock at eight inches. The right response is designing with it — raised beds where soil depth is limited, plantings sited where there is genuine root room, and hardscape laid out around what is actually diggable. We probe before we design.

The exposed granite is also an asset. Ledge outcrops framed with the right plantings look better than anything you could build. Moss, low junipers, bearberry, and ornamental grasses growing among rock read as natural and require nothing.

Salt and wind exposure is at the high end here. The same coastal palette applies — bayberry, rugosa rose, juniper, inkberry, beach plum, and ornamental grasses — and the same warning about broadleaf evergreens on exposed sites.

Stonework belongs in Cohasset in a way it does not everywhere. Fieldstone walls, granite steps, and natural stone terraces suit both the geology and the architecture. A good share of our work here is stone construction and the restoration of walls that have been standing for well over a century.

Property care standards are high and maintenance scopes are detailed. Consistency matters — same crew, same day, detailed rather than merely done.

Cohasset properties also tend to have significant mature plantings that carry real value — old rhododendrons, specimen Japanese maples, established hollies. Those want knowledgeable selective pruning rather than shearing, and the timing differs plant by plant. We identify what is on a property before touching anything, because a mature specimen that has been shaped correctly for thirty years can be ruined in an afternoon with a hedge trimmer.

Cris was a dream come true for us! We explained our hopes for how the yard and garden areas (we have several) would look, since they were really overrun with weeds, and the bushes and trees hadn't been pruned or trimmed in a couple years. Not only did he thoroughly and carefully do all the weeding, pruning, shaping, edging, removing old mulch and leaves, putting in new mulch, leaf-blowing boardwalks/walkways/driveway, and mowing… He went above and beyond, even taking the initiative of adding some new beautiful stones to make a walkway stand out in the garden. I cried when I saw the final results because I didn't know our home could look so amazing — now I want to be outside all the time!

Usually yes, and sometimes ledge is an advantage — it is an immovable base. The design has to work with where the rock actually is, which means we probe the area before we lay anything out. Sometimes the answer is a raised terrace over the ledge rather than an excavated patio into it.
