Mulch is the fastest visual upgrade available on a residential property. A weekend of edging and fresh mulch does more for curb appeal than a month of anything else, which is why it is the service most people book first.
It is also the service most commonly done badly. Too deep, piled against trunks, laid over last year's compacted layer without loosening it — all common, all harmful, all avoidable.
We install double-ground hardwood mulch as our standard across Whitman because it knits together, resists washout on slopes, and breaks down into something the soil actually wants. Dyed black and brown, pine bark, and aged compost blends are all available if you prefer them.

Most bed problems trace back to how the last few mulch applications were handled.
Mulch volcanoes around tree trunks
Mulch piled up the trunk holds moisture against bark, invites rot and pests, and encourages girdling roots that eventually strangle the tree. Bark is not root tissue and should never be buried. We pull mulch back to expose the root flare.
Beds six inches deep in old mulch
Adding two fresh inches every year without ever removing anything creates an anaerobic layer that sheds water instead of absorbing it. At some point the answer is to remove material, not add it.
Sour-smelling mulch that burns plants
Mulch stored in a large anaerobic pile can go sour and produce acids that scorch tender foliage on contact. Fresh delivery from a supplier with turnover, spread promptly, avoids it.
Weeds through brand-new mulch within weeks
Mulch suppresses weed seeds already in the soil. It does nothing about seed that blows in and lands on top. A pre-emergent under the mulch is what actually holds that line into the summer.

Fine or overly fresh mulch on a slope washes. Double-ground hardwood mats together and stays put. A proper cut edge also acts as a small dam.

Clear the beds
Weeds pulled at the root, leaves and debris removed, spent growth cut back. Mulching over weeds just hides them for a week.

Cut the edge
A spaded edge — a clean vertical cut with a shallow trench at the bottom — is what gives beds their crisp line and keeps grass from creeping in. It takes real time and it is the detail people notice from the road.

Break up the old layer
We scuff and turn the existing mulch so water can move through it and the new layer knits into it instead of sitting on a crust.

Pre-emergent if you want it
Applied to bare soil before mulch. It stops weed seed from germinating for roughly three months. Optional, and we skip it in beds where you are direct-seeding anything.

Spread and shape
Two to three inches, even across the bed, feathered thinner right at the edge so it does not spill onto the lawn, and pulled back from trunks and stems.

Every walkway, driveway, and patio blown clean. No mulch tracked across the lawn.

How much mulch is actually right — and when to stop adding
Two to three inches. That number is not a preference, it is what the research supports, and going past it causes problems rather than solving more of them.
At two to three inches, mulch does everything you want: it blocks light so weed seeds cannot germinate, it slows evaporation so beds hold moisture through a July dry spell, it moderates soil temperature so roots do not cook in August or heave in February, and as it breaks down it feeds organic matter into soil that generally needs more of it.
Past about four inches, it starts working against you. Water sheds off the surface instead of soaking in. The lower layers go anaerobic. Roots — sensing moisture and air up high — grow into the mulch layer instead of the soil, which leaves them exposed the moment things dry out. And shallow-rooted plants, especially azaleas and rhododendrons which are everywhere in this town, suffer first.
So the honest answer is that some years your beds need a full application and some years they need a rake-and-refresh. If your existing layer is still three inches deep, the right move is to loosen and turn it, top-dress lightly in the thin spots, and save the money. We will tell you when that is the case. Selling you six yards you do not need is a good way to lose the maintenance account.
Timing: get mulch down in early spring, before the heavy April rains and before weed seed germinates. Late spring works, it just means the pre-emergent window has partly closed and you are covering weeds that have already started.

Mulch is priced by volume plus labor, and the labor share depends heavily on prep.
Cubic yards required
One cubic yard covers roughly 160 square feet at two inches, or about 110 square feet at three inches. Bed square footage drives the material number.
Mulch type
Natural double-ground hardwood, dyed black or brown, pine bark, and compost blends all price differently.
Amount of edging
Linear feet of new spaded edge is often the biggest labor item, especially the first year on a property that has never had a defined edge.
Bed condition going in
A bed that was weeded last fall goes fast. A bed with established weeds and six inches of old mulch needs removal work first.
Wheelbarrow distance
Beds fifteen feet from where the truck can dump are quick. Beds behind a fence at the back of a deep lot are not.
Slope and obstacles
Steep beds and dense plantings slow the spread and require more hand work.

Mulch Delivery & Installation: Common Questions
Specific to mulch delivery & installation on South Shore properties.
Two to three inches total depth, including what is already there. If your beds still hold two or three inches from last year, they need loosening and a light top-dress, not a full application.
Double-ground natural hardwood is our default. It knits together so it stays put on slopes, it breaks down into genuinely useful organic matter, and it looks right against New England housing stock. Pine bark suits acid-loving plantings like rhododendrons and blueberries.
Usually not — normally we loosen it and add to it. Removal makes sense when the accumulated layer is over four inches, when it has crusted so hard water runs off it, or when it went sour.
Early spring, ideally before the wettest stretch of April. Beds are workable, weed seed has not germinated yet, and the mulch is in place before the growing season starts.
Mulch does not attract them, but any consistently damp material against your foundation is a bad idea. We keep mulch pulled back from siding and sill plates, and we keep the depth down along the foundation line.
