Landscaping in West Bridgewater, MA

West Bridgewater is a small town with a lot of open land and a river running through the middle of it. That combination produces a distinctive set of conditions — good growing soil in places, real flood-prone ground in others, and a lot of properties where the difference is only a few feet of elevation.

The Town River runs through West Bridgewater on its way to join the Taunton, and the floodplain along it is genuinely productive land — the old agricultural history of the town is not an accident. Properties on that bottom land often have deep, workable soil that grows almost anything well. They also flood. Understanding where your lot sits relative to that floodplain determines what is reasonable to build and where.

Away from the river, on the higher ground toward Route 106 and the Brockton line, conditions are more typical of the region: glacial till, moderate drainage, and acidic soil that wants lime. Standard lawn programs work well on those properties.

Salt-tolerant plantings along the road frontage and a spring flush of the affected turf handle it. It is a small detail that prevents replanting the same shrubs every few years.

West Bridgewater's open land also means wind exposure is higher than it is on the sheltered wooded lots east of here.
