Landscaping for Hull Homeowners

Hull is a sand spit with houses on it. Nantasket Beach on one side, the harbour on the other, and almost nowhere on the peninsula more than a few hundred yards from salt water.

That geography decides everything. Wind, salt spray, sand instead of soil, and lots so tight that the landscape is often a front strip and a side yard. Plants that thrive two towns inland fail here in a single winter.

Working on a barrier beach

Salt is not seasonal in Hull, it is constant. Onshore wind carries spray across the whole peninsula year-round, and winter storms drive it further. Broadleaf evergreens are effectively off the table on exposed lots — a rhododendron here browns out by February no matter how healthy it went into the season.

What does work is the beach-plant palette, and it looks right in the setting: rugosa rose, bayberry, beach plum, low juniper, and the grasses. American beachgrass holds sand on the seaward edges. Little bluestem and switchgrass move with the wind instead of snapping in it. Once established, these need essentially nothing, which suits a lot of Hull owners who are not here full-time.

The soil is sand, often pure. It drains instantly and holds no nutrients at all. A lawn on a Hull lot is a real commitment — it needs imported loam, organic matter built in over several seasons, consistent lime, and irrigation. Plenty of properties are better served by a designed sand-and-grass landscape than by fighting for turf.

Lot sizes on the peninsula run small, and access is the practical constraint. Streets are narrow, driveways are short, and staging a delivery takes planning. We schedule Hull work to avoid summer beach traffic on Nantasket Avenue, which otherwise adds an hour to a job.

Wind damage and storm cleanup are a recurring category here in a way they simply are not inland. Nor'easters strip mulch out of beds, drive sand across lawns, and take down anything not sited with exposure in mind. We hold capacity through storm season for exactly that.

What Hull Properties Need Most

Salt- and wind-tolerant planting design leads by a wide margin, followed by storm cleanup and soil building on the lots where an owner genuinely wants lawn. Compact hardscape — small patios and paths in sand — works well here because the drainage is effortless.

I had hesitated to spend money on landscaping — even though our yard needed help desperately — because watching HGTV convinced me that I should be able to DIY anything. But I've never known where to start, and the yard has continued to look shabby. I finally realized that sometimes you need to bring in the experts, and I am thrilled that we hired Giachetto Landscape, the consummate experts! Cristiano and his team bring a wealth of knowledge and creativity to their work, and it shows in the impeccable design and execution. The rates are fair, and the work is worth every penny. Cristiano attends to even the smallest detail, like fixing a drainage problem by adding stones under our gutters — I didn't even realize that it had been an issue, and now the problem is fixed and the results look gorgeous. I recommend Giachetto Landscape to anyone who values experience, attention to detail, and commitment to truly exceptional work.

Rugosa rose, bayberry, beach plum, low junipers, inkberry, and the grasses — beachgrass, little bluestem, switchgrass. Skip broadleaf evergreens on anything facing open water; winter salt spray browns them out regardless of how well they are planted.
