Landscaping in Stoughton, MA

Stoughton spreads across a good amount of land with a range of housing from historic homes near the center to postwar neighborhoods to newer subdivisions on the outskirts. The landscape conditions vary just as much.

Ames Long Pond, Glen Echo Lake, and the wetland corridors through town keep parts of Stoughton genuinely wet, while the higher ground drains normally. The practical implication is that two neighbors can need completely different approaches, and a soil test plus a look at the grade during rain tells us which situation we are in.

The older neighborhoods around Stoughton center have mature trees and established landscapes. Pruning knowledge matters there — a lot of properties have specimen plantings worth preserving that have been sheared into shapelessness for years. Restoring the natural form of a mature rhododendron or a Japanese maple takes a couple of seasons of selective work and it is worth doing.

Stoughton is also a town where we do a fair amount of phased work. Properties here are often big enough that doing everything in one season is a large number, and there is no real advantage to it. Front yard and the areas you use first, then the side and back in the following year or two. It spreads the cost, and it lets you live with each stage before deciding what the next one should be.
