Landscaping for Duxbury Homeowners
Duxbury runs from pine woods inland to open coast at Duxbury Beach, and the growing conditions change dramatically across that distance. A property near Island Creek and a property on the bay have almost nothing in common.
Our Duxbury work is design-led: coastal planting that survives, hardscape that handles sandy soil, and maintenance for larger properties that need consistent attention.

Coastal and inland Duxbury are different jobs
On the coastal side, salt spray and wind are the limiting factors. Winter wind carrying salt burns broadleaf evergreens that would be perfectly happy five miles inland. The plants that work — bayberry, rugosa rose, beach plum, juniper, inkberry, switchgrass, little bluestem — also happen to look right in that setting, which makes the constraint easier to design around than it sounds.
Sandy soil is the other constant. It drains fast, holds almost no nutrients, and is generally acidic. Lawns need lime consistently and organic matter built in over years. On the other hand, sandy soil is excellent ground for hardscape — bases behave predictably and frost heave risk is lower than on clay sites.
Inland Duxbury, out toward the pine woods and the Pembroke line, has heavy tree cover and correspondingly heavy leaf and needle load. Fall cleanups are substantial, and needles want redistributing to acid-loving plantings rather than hauling.
Property scale here supports real landscape projects — patios, walls, walkways, extensive planting beds, and outdoor living space. Many Duxbury clients want one contractor handling the whole property year-round rather than coordinating several, which suits how we like to work.
Deer pressure is high, particularly on the wooded inland lots. Planting design accounts for it up front. Arborvitae is not a realistic screen plant in most of Duxbury; inkberry, holly, and juniper are.
Duxbury properties also tend to have significant mature tree canopy inland, and that raises a question we get asked constantly: what to do about the lawn areas that have gone thin under it. On a large lot the honest answer is usually to reduce maintained turf rather than fight for it — convert the deepest shade to a woodland groundcover planting and put the lawn budget into the areas that get real sun. It looks better and costs less to maintain every year after.

Read our Google reviews“Love the work done by Giachetto Landscape! Cristiano did a spring cleanup for our yard and it looks fantastic, we are so happy with it. We could have never done it ourselves and are so glad that we used them! From beginning to end it was a great experience. Cristiano was very responsive and came by to give a free quote within days of my initial outreach. He was easy to work with and is such a hard worker, I highly recommend!”

Landscaping in Duxbury: Questions
Specific to properties in Duxbury and the surrounding area.
Bayberry, rugosa rose, beach plum, juniper, inkberry, switchgrass, and little bluestem all handle salt spray and wind. Avoid broadleaf evergreens like rhododendron and cherry laurel on exposed sites — winter wind burns them badly no matter how healthy they are going in.
Yes, with organic matter and lime. Sandy soil holds neither water nor nutrients well, so the strategy is building organic content through compost topdressing after annual aeration, plus lime based on regular soil tests. It takes a few seasons and the improvement is real and lasting.
Usually not. Under mature pine and oak you are fighting deep shade, root competition, and acidic needle litter simultaneously. Fine fescue gets you partway. Converting the worst areas to ferns, groundcovers, and a mulched woodland floor looks intentional, needs almost nothing, and lets the lawn budget go where grass can actually thrive.
