Landscaping for Kingston Homeowners

Kingston sits where the Jones River meets Kingston Bay, with cranberry bogs inland and Silver Lake on its western edge. It is a town with real variety in a small area.

We work throughout Kingston on residential maintenance, planting design, and hardscape, and the sandy soil that dominates here shapes most of our recommendations.

Kingston ground and water

Sandy outwash soil dominates inland Kingston, the same material that supports cranberry growing across this part of the county. It drains fast, holds little, and is acidic. Lawns here need lime on a regular schedule and organic matter built in over years. Compost topdressing after annual aeration is the highest-value thing most Kingston homeowners can do for their turf.

The bay side and the Jones River corridor bring different considerations: salt exposure near the water, tidal influence in the lower river, and wetlands buffer regulation across a good share of the near-water properties. We check regulatory status before quoting any grading or hardscape near those areas.

The sandy soil is excellent for hardscape. Bases compact predictably, drainage is naturally good, and frost heave risk is lower than on clay-heavy sites. A well-built patio in Kingston should stay flat for decades.

Silver Lake on the western side and the wooded areas around it are shaded and acidic. Fine fescue blends and higher mowing heights are the right approach for those lawns, and the fall leaf and needle load is significant.

Route 3 and Route 3A run through town along with Route 27 and Route 106, and the Kingston commuter rail station brings a fair amount of newer residential development. Those newer lots have the standard construction-fill lawn situation that responds well to a few seasons of aeration and compost.

Kingston's newer developments near the commuter rail station are worth calling out separately. Those lawns went in over construction fill, and they follow a predictable pattern: fine for two springs, then thin and drought-stressed by the third summer. It is not a fertilizer problem, it is a soil-depth and compaction problem, and the owners who start aerating and topdressing with compost early end up with a fundamentally better lawn than the neighbors who only feed.

Chris did an amazing job installing my new lawn with sod. From him being readily available to take a look at my job in the beginning, to providing me a prompt, competitive quote, to the pulling up of my old weed filled lawn, hand laying the new sod, and setting up of the sprinklers/timers to water the lawn, he has been a pleasure to work with. He also pulled out a large shrub and planted a smaller one, as well as re-mulched. He is professional, responsive to all questions, easy to work with, and a hard worker. I highly recommend him for any landscape project you may have.

Sandy outwash soil. It drains beautifully and holds almost no water, so a week without rain shows immediately. Building organic matter through compost topdressing after annual aeration improves water retention meaningfully over three or four seasons. Deep, infrequent watering also drives roots down where moisture lasts longer.
