Landscaping for Freetown Homeowners

Freetown is dominated by the Freetown-Fall River State Forest — thousands of acres of woodland — with the Assonet village and residential areas around its edges.

Properties are large, heavily wooded, and almost entirely on wells and septic.

Forest-edge property

The state forest defines the town. Properties bordering it are deeply shaded, acidic from decades of oak and pine litter, and carry a fall leaf load that makes two-pass cleanups genuinely necessary rather than an upsell.

Turf under that canopy is a losing proposition in the deepest areas. Fine fescue and a high cut hold the partial shade; where the canopy has fully won, a woodland planting of ferns and native groundcovers under limbed-up trees looks intentional and needs nothing.

The Assonet River and the wetland systems through town bring buffer regulation to a fair number of properties, and Assonet village itself has older housing on tighter lots than the rest of the town.

Well water and septic are the norm, so lawn installs get scheduled for early fall when rainfall carries more of the irrigation load, and septic locations govern grading and planting.

Deer pressure at the forest edge is as heavy as anywhere we work. Planting design accounts for it from the start — no arborvitae, and a lean toward boxwood, spirea, inkberry, ferns and grasses.

Fire risk is a real consideration on the state forest edge in a dry summer, and it affects planting choices closer to the house. Keeping the immediate perimeter to low, well-watered, less resinous material rather than dense evergreen right against the siding is sensible practice on a forest-adjacent lot.

What Freetown Properties Need Most

Two-pass fall cleanups on forest-edge lots, shade and woodland planting where turf has lost, lawn installation planned around wells, and deer-resistant design.

  • Spring & Fall Cleanups

The service our neighbors talk about most. Leaves, sticks, matted beds, and winter debris gone — every nook, not just the open lawn.

  • Landscape Design & Planting

Beds and foundation plantings designed around your actual light, soil, and how big things get in ten years — not how they look on the truck.

    Learn more

  • Lawn Mowing & Weekly Maintenance

Weekly or bi-weekly cuts with sharp blades, crisp trim lines, and every hard surface blown clean before we leave.

    Learn more

  • New Lawn Installation: Sod & Hydroseeding

Sod for instant results, hydroseed for value, slice seeding for renovation — with the grading and loam depth the lawn actually needs.

    Learn more

  • Shrub Trimming & Pruning

Pruning timed to each plant, not to the calendar — so your hydrangeas still bloom and your hedges stay full to the ground.

  • Fertilization & Weed Control

Programs built off a real soil test — not a bag schedule. Correct the pH first, then feed, then the weeds have nowhere to go.

We cannot recommend Cris and his team enough! Timely response, came out to give us a free estimate, and got to work (as soon as the weather permitted!) We have had a difficult time attempting our yard clean up each Spring and knew it was time to hire a professional team. Extremely satisfied with our beautifully manicured yard and the kids are excited to get back out there and play! Thanks again Cris!!

Stop fighting it. Under mature forest canopy you are up against deep shade, root competition and acidic litter at once. A woodland planting of native ferns, groundcovers and shade shrubs under limbed-up trees thrives there and needs almost nothing once established.
