Norton sits between Taunton and Attleboro with Wheaton College at its centre, the Norton Reservoir on one side, and a lot of woodland in between.

It is a comfortable suburban town for our purposes — established neighbourhoods, newer subdivisions, and enough acreage on the edges to make cleanups substantial.

Norton Reservoir and the ponds through town bring shoreline responsibilities: phosphorus-free fertilizer, applications held back from the water, and a native buffer planting to intercept runoff before it reaches the reservoir.

The wooded sections carry the standard package — shade, acidic soil from oak and pine litter, and a heavy fall leaf load. Fine fescue and a high mowing height keep those lawns viable, and two-pass cleanups are the sensible default.

The newer subdivisions have construction-fill lawns that follow the familiar arc: fine for two springs, struggling by the third summer. Aeration with compost topdressing over three or four seasons is what separates them from the neighbours by year four.

The Wheaton College area brings some rental property, and the requirements there are consistency and curb appeal rather than elaborate planting — mowed, edged, and presentable on a fixed schedule.

Route 495 and Route 140 run through town with commercial frontages that need corridor grounds maintenance and take heavy winter salting.

Norton also has a fair number of properties backing onto conservation land and the reservoir buffer, and that edge is worth designing rather than ignoring. A deliberate band of native shrubs where mown lawn meets woodland reads as intentional, needs nothing once established, and stops the woods advancing into the yard on their own schedule.

Norton's mix of older centre housing and newer subdivision growth means the two halves of town need genuinely different first steps. The older properties usually want bed renovation and selective pruning; the newer ones want soil work before anything else is worth spending money on.
