Landscaping for Westwood Homeowners
Westwood is largely wooded and low-density, with big lots, mature oak and pine, and a housing stock that ranges from historic to newer estate-scale construction.
The character of the town is trees, and that shapes almost every recommendation we make here.

A wooded town
Heavy canopy across most of the town means shade is the default condition. Turf where the sun reaches, fine fescue where it half-reaches, and woodland planting where it does not. Trying to hold a bluegrass lawn under mature oak here is a losing project that costs money every year.
The soil under all that canopy is acidic from decades of leaf and needle litter, and lime is a permanent line item. A soil test before any lawn program is worth far more than another bag of fertilizer.
Fall is a serious season. On a wooded Westwood acre the leaf load is substantial and oaks drop weeks after the maples finish, so two-pass cleanups are standard rather than optional.
Hale Reservation and the conservation land through town mean many properties abut woodland directly. A deliberate naturalised border at that edge — winterberry, highbush blueberry, native ferns — looks intentional, needs nothing, and stops the woods advancing on their own terms.
The Route 128 and 95 interchange area brings some commercial grounds work, and the University Station development added retail frontage that needs the same consistent, unglamorous maintenance any commercial site does.
Westwood's low density means many properties have genuine privacy already, which changes what planting is for. Instead of screening, the useful work is usually framing — opening a view where the woods have closed in, or defining an edge so the maintained area reads as deliberate rather than as wherever the mower stopped.
Services in this town
What Westwood Properties Need Most
Two-pass fall cleanups on heavily wooded lots, shade planting and woodland-edge design, lime and soil programs for acidic ground, and commercial grounds work around the Route 128 interchange.
Spring & Fall Cleanups
The service our neighbors talk about most. Leaves, sticks, matted beds, and winter debris gone — every nook, not just the open lawn.

Landscape Design & Planting
Beds and foundation plantings designed around your actual light, soil, and how big things get in ten years — not how they look on the truck.

Fertilization & Weed Control
Programs built off a real soil test — not a bag schedule. Correct the pH first, then feed, then the weeds have nowhere to go.

Shrub Trimming & Pruning
Pruning timed to each plant, not to the calendar — so your hydrangeas still bloom and your hedges stay full to the ground.

Lawn Mowing & Weekly Maintenance
Weekly or bi-weekly cuts with sharp blades, crisp trim lines, and every hard surface blown clean before we leave.

Read our Google reviews“We cannot recommend Cris and his team enough! Timely response, came out to give us a free estimate, and got to work (as soon as the weather permitted!) We have had a difficult time attempting our yard clean up each Spring and knew it was time to hire a professional team. Extremely satisfied with our beautifully manicured yard and the kids are excited to get back out there and play! Thanks again Cris!!”

Landscaping in Westwood: Questions
Specific to properties in Westwood and the surrounding area.
Decades of oak and pine litter under heavy canopy push soil pH down steadily, and acidic soil locks up the nutrients you are paying for. Testing every two years and liming to the rate the test specifies does more for these lawns than any fertilizer program.
On a wooded Westwood lot, yes. Oaks hold their leaves into November, weeks after the maples finish, so a single late-October pass leaves the entire oak drop still to come. That second layer mats under snow and causes the damage you find in April.
A naturalised native border — winterberry, sweet pepperbush, highbush blueberry and native ferns. It handles the shade and moisture at a woodland edge, reads as deliberate design, and stops the woods creeping into the lawn.
Framing rather than screening. Opening a sight line where woodland has closed in, defining the edge of the maintained area so it looks deliberate, and giving the areas you use a sense of enclosure. It is a different job from blocking a neighbour and it is often more satisfying.
