Landscaping for Medfield Homeowners

Medfield has an intact historic town centre, substantial conservation land, and the Charles River running along its eastern boundary.

It is a town where landscapes tend to be established and where the right move is usually refinement rather than replacement.

Historic centre, wooded edges

The older homes around the town centre want period-appropriate planting — symmetry, boxwood, lilac, hydrangea, and natural stone. Restraint reads better than novelty against that architecture, and it holds up over decades.

The Charles River corridor and the extensive conservation land — Rocky Narrows, the state hospital land, Noon Hill — mean a good share of Medfield property abuts protected open space. A naturalised native border where lawn meets woodland looks deliberate and stops the woods advancing on their own schedule.

Wetlands buffer regulation applies widely given the river and the wet meadows through town. Grading, drainage outlets and new hardscape near those areas may need Conservation Commission review, which we check before quoting.

The soil varies. River-corridor lots can have genuinely good alluvial loam; the upland wooded ground runs sandier and more acidic. We test rather than assume, because the amendment plan differs substantially between the two.

Lots are large and wooded enough that fall is a real season here, and two-pass cleanups are standard on most properties. Deer pressure through the conservation-adjacent neighbourhoods is heavy and factors into every planting plan.

A meaningful number of Medfield properties abut the old state hospital land and the conservation parcels around it, and deer move freely through all of it. Planting design here has to assume heavy browsing pressure from the start — which mostly means never using arborvitae for screening and leaning on holly, inkberry, spruce and boxwood instead.

What Medfield Properties Need Most

Period-appropriate planting in the historic centre, naturalised woodland-edge design where properties meet conservation land, two-pass fall cleanups on wooded lots, and drainage work in the river corridor.

  • Spring & Fall Cleanups

The service our neighbors talk about most. Leaves, sticks, matted beds, and winter debris gone — every nook, not just the open lawn.

  • Shrub Trimming & Pruning

Pruning timed to each plant, not to the calendar — so your hydrangeas still bloom and your hedges stay full to the ground.

  • Drainage Solutions & Grading

Standing water, soggy lawns, and water against the foundation — solved by moving water somewhere it belongs, not by hiding it.

  • Lawn Mowing & Weekly Maintenance

Weekly or bi-weekly cuts with sharp blades, crisp trim lines, and every hard surface blown clean before we leave.

  • Mulch Delivery & Installation

Beds edged to a clean line and mulched at the right depth — dark, even, and pulled back off every trunk and stem.

Chris did an amazing job installing my new lawn with sod. From him being readily available to take a look at my job in the beginning, to providing me a prompt, competitive quote, to the pulling up of my old weed filled lawn, hand laying the new sod, and setting up of the sprinklers/timers to water the lawn, he has been a pleasure to work with. He also pulled out a large shrub and planted a smaller one, as well as re-mulched. He is professional, responsive to all questions, easy to work with, and a hard worker. I highly recommend him for any landscape project you may have.

Restrained and symmetrical. Clipped boxwood flanking the entry, lilac at the house corners, hydrangea for summer, and natural stone for walks. It suits the architecture and it still looks right in twenty years, which a trend-driven scheme will not.
